The Schools

The Schools

In the early 1960’s there were 11 Elkhart County schools participating in sports.  Consolidation in the mid-60’s changed the athletic scene, breaking up some longtime rivalries, while giving birth to new ones.

Following the 1965-66 school year Bristol High School closed its doors.  The Pirates were absorbed into the Elkhart school system.  Beginning with the 1967-68 school year New Paris (Cubs) and Millersburg (Millers) High Schools were consolidated to form the Fairfield Falcons.  That spring (1968) saw the final competition for the Nappanee, Wakarusa, Jefferson, and Middlebury high school teams.  In the fall of 1969 Nappanee (Bulldogs) and Wakarusa (Indians) began competition as the NorthWood Panthers, while Middlebury (Middies) and Jefferson Tigers) became the Northridge Raiders.

The athletic scene changed yet again in 1972 with the split of Elkhart High School into Elkhart Memorial (Chargers) and Elkhart Central.  Central retained the “Blue Blazers” mascot name.  In 1974 Bethany Christian (originally Braves, later Bruins) began interscholastic competition as a member of the IHSAA.

Only three schools, Concord (Minutemen), Goshen (Redskins), and Jimtown (Jimmies) have continued as single schools.

A year-by-year list of boys basketball rosters, records, and season scoring is accessible on the following website:
