Chuck Baker

CHUCK BAKER, Elkhart High School, 1969

Chuck was the 1969 Indiana state champion in the mile run, helping the Blue Blazers to the team title. He also helped Elkhart foursomes win mile relay titles in 1968 and 1969. Baker was given the Tim Bringle Award, emblematic of Elkhart’s top male senior athlete. He was the first-ever track and field competitor to be so honored. His converted times of 1:52.6 in the 800 and 4:07.3 in the 1600 still remain as all-time Elkhart city standards. Baker later attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated in 1973. He once finished second in the Big Ten Conference 1000-yard indoor race and fourth in Big Ten outdoor mile run. He also was a member of Wisconsin’s two-mile relay team which set a national record at the time. Baker pursued a career in the U.S. Marines where he achieved the rank of colonel. Chuck, a member of the Indiana Track Hall of Fame.
